Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. She was a student at the Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also received straight A's on her A-levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman has replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor when Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role with Matt Smith.
